What's in a name?
Hauser, Hooser, Houser, or Hoosier - if that's your surname then you're probably part of our big family, descended from Swiss-German origins. Our original family surname, as far back as 1520 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, would have been Húser. Some 30 or so years later in nearby Elsaß/Alsace, this became Haúßer. After Martin Haúßer, Sr. & his wife Maria emigrated to Philadelphia in 1727 the spelling and pronunciation of our surname became Americanized, with several different variations down the years and generations. Today, the most widely used surname variants are Hauser, Hooser, Houser, and Hoosier. Several other less frequent spellings exist today and in extant records. The original Swiss-German pronunciation of Hoo’zer is still used, along with other commonly used Americanized pronunciations including How’zer, Haw’zer, and Hoo’-zhur. |

The H4FA is open to everyone interested in the genealogy, history, or biography of the Hauser, Hooser, Houser, Hoosier (& Húser or Haúßer) family.
